I recently gave a talk going over Chuang’s Social Contagion, a book analyzing the COVID-19 crisis in China from a specifically Marxist lens. This book does a really good job of providing nuanced materialist analysis which tries to make sense of things on the ground as opposed to retrofitting narratives, as a lot of China coverage tends to do. Through the presentation, I summarize the main themes of the book (which are a web of their own), and try to break them down into a concise and clearly segmented fashion. I may turn this into a video sometime, but for now, I’ll just keep the slides up here.
